Three workers of independent candidate Sheikh Mojibur Rahman Iqbal were injured in a knife attack allegedly carried out by BNP supporters near a polling station in Bajitpur in Kishoreganj on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred near Halimpur High School polling centre while voting was underway.
The injured were identified as Naim Hossain, 28, his father Hasan Mia, 58, and Abdul Kaiyum, 62, residents of West Kutubpur village in Halimpur Union.
Another BNP supporter, Al Amin, 20, was also injured in the attack.
All four victims sustained multiple injuries, including wounds to the head, chest and arms.
Naim was seriously injured in the chest. They were admitted to Bajitpur Jahurul Islam Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the three workers were heading to the polling station when a group of people blocked their way. When they protested, the group allegedly attacked them with knives.
Moniruzzaman Monir, former general secretary of Bajitpur BNP, alleged that workers of BNP candidate and former Halimpur Union chairman Kajol Bhuiyan obstructed the independent candidate’s supporters from reaching the polling centre and attacked them.
Following the incident, a group of supporters of a candidate “Duck symbol” reportedly attacked and vandalised the homes of Kajol Bhuiyan, his brother and several others in Shekhdi village.
Kajol Bhuiyan confirmed that his house was damaged, but he declined to comment on the stabbing allegations and ended the call.
Officer-in-Charge of Bajitpur Police Station SM Shahidullah said the injured were rescued and admitted to the hospital.
He added that no formal complaint has been lodged yet and that the police will take necessary action if a complaint is received.
