Syed Mohiuddin Ahmed, widely known as Mohi, died on Tuesday morning in Dhaka after suffering a cardiac arrest, ending a lifetime spent inside and around the boxing ring.

He fought, coached, judged and organised. Few in Bangladesh boxing wore as many hats, and fewer still wore them with such consistency.

Mohi started as a national boxer before shifting into coaching, where he built his real legacy. He shaped countless fighters, turning raw youngsters into disciplined competitors through years of hands-on work.

Even at 66, he refused to step away. He spent most days at Khilgaon’s Tilpapara Jorpukur ground, drilling basics, correcting footwork, and keeping the sport alive at grassroots level.

Bangladesh boxing often struggles for structure, but Mohiuddin filled gaps with sheer effort and personal commitment.

Mohi served as Joint Secretary of the Bangladesh Boxing Federation, Vice-President of the Referee Judge Association, and Chief Coach, while holding an International Coaching Grade-2 certification.

Those roles gave him authority, but his real influence came from the gym floor. Young fighters trusted him because he showed up every day. His passing leaves a vacuum that titles cannot replace. Bangladesh boxing loses not just an official, but a builder.

Mohi leaves behind his family, including his son Syed Rashed Ahmed Turjo, who once featured in the national youth football setup and played in the domestic league.

His funeral will take place after Maghrib at the Khilgaon Tilpapara Jam-e-Mosque, where the sport he served so faithfully will gather to say goodbye.
