Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir and United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss strengthening bilateral trade and investment cooperation.
The meeting, held at the commerce minister’s office in the Secretariat on Tuesday, featured fruitful discussions on various aspects of bilateral trade, investment, and economic cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.
During the talks, Ambassador Christensen noted that parliamentary proceedings are being conducted smoothly and effectively under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, which he described as a positive example of democratic practice.
He further emphasised that the expansion of bilateral trade would be mutually beneficial for both nations.
As part of efforts to strengthen trade dialogue, the Ambassador announced that Brendan Lynch, the Assistant United States Trade Representative (USTR) for South and Central Asia, will soon visit Bangladesh. The Ambassador also expressed interest in learning about Bangladesh’s new import policy order.
In response, commerce minister stated that the Ministry of Commerce and other relevant ministries are currently working on the formulation of the new policy. He expressed hope that the draft of the “Import Policy Order 2026” would be sent to the business community for their feedback very shortly.
Both parties expressed a strong interest in further expanding trade, investment, and policy cooperation.
The meeting was also attended by the Secretary (Routine Duty) of the Ministry of Commerce, Md Abdur Rahim Khan, and the Political Economic Counsellor of the US Embassy in Dhaka, Eric Geelan.
