The US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen visited Sonamasjid Land Port and the historical sites of ancient Gaur in Chapainawabganj on Wednesday.
The ambassador arrived at the historic Sonamasjid premises in Shibganj upazila from Rajshahi at 9am. During his visit, he toured various archaeological relics of the ancient capital of Gaur.
Ambassador Christensen also observed the operations of Sonamasjid Land Port and immigration activities. He exchanged views with Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members at Sonamasjid Border Outpost (BOP), where he enquired about border management and security operations.
The ambassador appeared visibly interested and delighted while visiting the historical sites, including Tahkhana Mosque and the shrine (mazar) of Hazrat Shah Nematullah.
He took photographs of various structures himself and expressed a keen interest in learning about the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. During the tour, officials briefed him on the significance and historical background of the landmarks.
Accompanying the ambassador during the visit were Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rajshahi Range Mohammad Shahjahan; Superintendent of Police for Chapainawabganj Goutam Kumar Biswas; Commanding Officer of 59 BGB Mahananda Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury; and Shibganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mazharul Islam, along with other concerned administrative officials.
Locals believe that the ambassador’s visit will further assist in highlighting the historical and archaeological importance of Chapainawabganj on the international stage.
