The United States Embassy in Dhaka has issued a security advisory urging US citizens in Bangladesh to remain cautious ahead of the country’s 13th parliamentary election and a national referendum scheduled for 12 February.
In a statement published on its website and official Facebook page on Friday, the embassy said the election period could see incidents of political violence or extremist attacks. Such incidents may target political rallies, polling stations and religious sites, including churches, temples and mosques.
The embassy warned that demonstrations or rallies intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational at any time and escalate into violence.
The statement advised US citizens to avoid protests and exercise caution in and around large public gatherings.
Referring to the imposition of restrictions on motorcycle movement from 10 February midnight and on all forms of transport on 11 and 12 February, the embassy said it will provide limited onsite or in-person services at the US Embassy in Dhaka on the latter two days.

The advisory urged US citizens to remain alert, avoid large crowds, stay aware of their surroundings and keep a low profile during the election period.
It also advised carrying a fully charged mobile phone at all times for emergency communication and planning alternative travel routes.
