Police have rescued Rustam Ali, a member of the Eidgarh Union Parishad (UP), around 16 hours after he was abducted from the Eidgaon–Eidgarh road in Ramu upazila.
Ramu Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam Bhuiyan confirmed the matter. He was rescued from Rashidnagar Union at around 9:30pm on Wednesday.
The abduction took place at around 5am on the same day in the Panerchhara Dhala area while Rustam was travelling from Eidgaon Bazar to Eidgarh. A group of armed miscreants intercepted his path and took him away, then demanding a ransom of Tk30 lakh from the family.
Following the incident, multiple teams led by OC Monirul conducted day-long operations in various hilly areas.
OC Monirul said investigation is underway to identify and arrest those involved. However, no one has been arrested in this incident yet.
The victim’s family added that the kidnappers released Rustam only after receiving a ransom of Tk10 lakh. Police later picked him up from the release location.
Acting Chairman of Eidgarh Union Jasim Uddin said robberies and kidnappings have been occurring on the Eidgaon-Eidgarh road for a long time. The kidnapping of a UP member is extremely alarming.
