British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that the United Kingdom will not become involved in the wider conflict spreading across the Middle East following US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Starmer said the UK’s primary priority is to ensure the protection of British citizens residing in the region. Simultaneously, efforts will be made to seek a swift resolution to restore security and stability in the area.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump warned that if allied nations, including the UK, do not provide military assistance in the region, the future of the NATO military alliance could face risks.
However, the British Prime Minister has indicated that Britain will not allow itself to be drawn into any broader conflict and will continue working towards a diplomatic resolution to the situation.
This follows recent developments where Germany also came out stating that it will become involved in the Iran war. The country will also not participate in any effort to keep the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy supply route, open through military force. Greece has announced a similar position.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had expressed hope that countries affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz would send warships to keep this crucial waterway open. He also anticipated a role for the NATO military alliance.
Following US-Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran declared that it would attack ships of the US, Israel, and their allies attempting to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
A spokesperson for the German government said on Monday that NATO has no connection to the Iran war. Germany will not join the war or any attempt to keep the Strait of Hormuz open through military means.
