Benfica’s Argentine winger Gianluca Presttiani has spoken out for the first time following his suspension over alleged racist remarks aimed at Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior. The 20-year-old expressed frustration at UEFA, claiming the governing body imposed sanctions without any evidence.
The incident occurred during the Champions League match against Real Madrid on 17 February, which caused widespread controversy. Presttiani was temporarily banned for one game, missing Benfica’s next leg against Los Blancos.
In an interview with Argentine TV channel Telefe, Presttiani said:
“I have never been racist and never will be. It hurts deeply to be accused of something I did not do. I said nothing of the sort, yet they punished me without proof.”
“It was very painful not being able to play in the return leg, but now the matter is over.”
During the 50th minute of the match, Vinícius scored a remarkable goal and celebrated near the corner stand, drawing a yellow card from the referee. Presttiani’s reaction to the booking sparked the chain of events that led to the racism allegation.
TV footage shows Presttiani covering his mouth with his jersey and speaking. Vinícius and nearby teammates appeared to react angrily, with Mbappé present at the scene. French media reported that, based on the footage, Mbappé allegedly told Presttiani: “Bloody racist.”
After the match, French media also cited that Presttiani had reportedly said “Vini a monkey” five times while covering his mouth.
UEFA has confirmed the investigation into Presttiani is ongoing and has declined to comment on his claims. Benfica condemned the allegations as “propaganda” and voiced full support for their player.
Presttiani added:
“I am grateful to my club, who trusted and supported me throughout. I have spoken with my coach José Mourinho and teammates to clarify the situation. Those who know me understand who I am, and that is enough for me.”
The winger is now focused on securing a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad. He made his international debut in November and was part of the squad for recent friendlies against Mauritania and Zambia, although he did not play.
“Playing in the World Cup is my dream. Every day I work to earn that opportunity. Fighting for a place in this team is also a joy, and I feel I am doing well at Benfica.”
