Senior Supreme Court advocate and Jamaat-e-Islami central committee member Shishir Manir has addressed an open letter to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, urging urgent action to tackle waterlogging across Bangladesh.

In the letter he asked Tarique to take urgent measures to tackle waterlogging in the Haor regions, including Sunamganj, Habiganj, Kishoreganj, and Netrokona.

The letter, posted on his verified Facebook account on Friday morning, highlights the severe threat to farmers’ crops and livelihoods caused by prolonged flooding.

In his letter, Shishir Manir wrote, “I do not know whether this letter will reach you. Yet, I write to you with a heart full of hope.”

He described the plight of Haor communities, emphasising that a single crop is the lifeline for these people, and standing water is destroying it.

“Many have tried to resolve this issue as best they can, but they are failing,” he added.

Shishir Manir noted the Prime Minister’s busy schedule but stressed the urgent need for action to protect lives and crops.

He suggested that the government conduct an aerial survey of the affected areas by helicopter, and, if necessary, deploy patriotic army personnel.

He also urged the administration to implement more effective measures to alleviate the waterlogging crisis.

The letter recalled that canal excavation programmes were initiated during the Prime Minister’s tenure, noting that his father had gained popularity through similar initiatives.

Shishir Manir urged that Dirai and Shalla areas receive priority for canal excavation, warning that unplanned embankments are causing further damage.

“I hope you can manage it, Inshallah,” he wrote.

Shishir Manir concluded his letter with gratitude and full personal details, citing his full name, designation as a senior lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, and address: Doulatpur village, Brajendraganj post office, Shalla police station, Sunamganj district. The letter was dated 3 April 2026, 9:32am.
