A Cox’s Bazar court has sentenced two men to death for possessing 4 kilograms of crystal meth (Ice) and one lakh yaba tablets recovered in Teknaf.
Judge of District and Sessions Judge’s Court Mohammad Abdur Rahim delivered the verdict on Sunday.
Delwar Hossain, bench assistant at the court, confirmed the judgment.
The convicts are Abdur Rahman, 30, of Wabrang village in Hnila Union of Teknaf, and Mohammad Nur, 25, of Moulvibazar area in the same union.
Court officials said both convicts were present during the verdict. Public Prosecutor Advocate Sirajul Islam represented the state.
According to the case documents, on 16 June 2022 several individuals crossed into Hnila from Myanmar’s zero line.
On spotting a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) patrol, they tried to flee, abandoning two sacks.
BGB personnel detained Abdur Rahman and Mohammad Nur and seized the sacks—one containing 4.315 kilograms of crystal meth valued at Tk21.57 crore, and the other holding one lakh yaba tablets worth Tk3 crore.
BGB Nayek Md Anwarul Haque later filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act at Teknaf Police Station, naming six people including the two convicts.
Charges were framed on 19 February 2023, and the trial proceeded with witness testimony, cross-examination, presentation of evidence and chemical test reports. After completing all procedures, the court fixed Sunday for the verdict.
Judge Mohammad Abdur Rahim found the two accused guilty under Section 36(1), Table 10(ga) of the Narcotics Control Act 2018 and sentenced them to death.
