BNP has suspended all of its programmes scheduled for this year’s Victory Day, announcing the decision on Sunday through its media cell.
The suspension applies to all events planned from 1 to 15 December, its media cell notified, with the party saying that the programmes were postponed due to the deteriorating health of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. They also sought prayers from the public for her recovery.
Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on 23 November. She was moved to the CCU on 27 November on doctors’ advice.
Since then, her condition has remained unchanged, according to her personal physician and BNP Standing Committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.
At an emergency press briefing on Sunday at the BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters, Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the suspension.
He said the party had no option but to postpone the Victory Day activities because Khaleda Zia remains hospitalised, also noting that her medical board has yet to make a decision regarding her treatment abroad.
On Saturday, the BNP had announced a month-long set of programmes to mark Victory Day on 16 December.
