A court has sent two associates of Major General (Retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, the military adviser to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, to a four-day remand in a case filed at New Market Police Station in the capital over the anti-discrimination student movement.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam granted the four-day remand on Monday after a hearing.
The accused sent to remand are Md Mohidul Islam (42) and Md Chan Mia (46). One of them is Tarique Siddique’s driver and the other is his caretaker.
The case’s investigating officer, Police Inspector Amjad Hossain Talukder, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand. Government counsel of the concerned court, Harun-or-Rashid, confirmed the matter.
Earlier, on 19 April, Mohidul Islam was arrested from Thakurgaon and Chan Mia from the Bhashantek area of Dhaka.
The police remand application stated that the accused used to receive directives from senior leaders including Sheikh Hasina and Obaidul Quader through Tarique Siddique and played a role in implementing them.
The investigation mentioned that they used to deliver money, weapons, and ammunition from Tarique Siddique to anti-movement parties in various areas of Dhaka for the purpose of suppressing the anti-discrimination student movement and carrying out oppression, beatings, and attempted killings.
According to case sources, on 19 July 2024, a peaceful march in front of New Market’s Gate No 1 was attacked with gunfire and domestic and foreign weapons. Abdul Wadud (45) was shot dead, and several others were seriously injured. The investigation stated that the accused were present at the scene and played an active role in the attack.
Additionally, the investigation revealed that they are still in contact with absconding accused. The investigating agency believes that interrogation on remand will help identify the instigators, and those who supplied and used the money and weapons.
