Two friends were killed in a collision with a truck while returning from a wedding in the capital’s Jatrabari area on Saturday night.
The accident occurred at Shonir Akhra in Jatrabari. The victims were Khairul Hossain Kamrul, 22, a Higher Secondary second-year student at Vashantek Government College, and his friend Yasin Rana, 27, a motorcycle trader.
Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Sirajul Islam confirmed the accident saying both were riding a motorcycle when the truck struck them.
“The truck driver fled the scene. Authorities seized the vehicle, and following the family’s request, the bodies were handed over without a post-mortem” said SI Islam.
Khairul’s brother-in-law, Mohsin Matubber, said Khairul lived with his family in Vashantek, Mirpur-14, while Yasin lived nearby.
On Friday, the pair had travelled to Lakshmipur for a friend’s wedding. After the ceremony, they took the newlywed friend’s motorcycle to return to Dhaka.
Mohsin said Khairul spoke to his family by phone after reaching Shonir Akhra, saying he would arrive home in 40–45 minutes. Shortly afterwards, the family learned of the accident.
Reports indicate the motorcycle was hit by a truck carrying chickens, causing the pair to fall and sustain serious injuries. Locals rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
DMCH police outpost officer-in-charge, Inspector Faruk, said Khairul was declared dead at 11pm, while Yasin died during treatment at 11.30pm.
