Two people were killed and three others injured when a bus struck a roadside divider in front of Setu Bhaban in the capital’s Banani area on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Sagar Mia, 35, son of Chan Mia, a resident of Mohishbandi village in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha, and Muslim Uddin, 74, whose address is listed as Ishakha Road in Ahmednagar, Mirpur, according to his ID, police said.
Both victims were day labourers working under a city corporation contractor.
Sub-Inspector Md Rafiqul Islam of Banani Police Station said their identities were confirmed through national identity cards, and their family members have been informed.
The bodies were sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue in the evening for autopsy.
AKM Moin Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (Operations) of the police station, said a Bhuiyan Paribahan bus was heading towards Gazipur when a pedestrian suddenly came in front of the vehicle in the Banani area.
In an attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian, the driver turned the bus sharply to the right, causing it to run onto the roadside divider around 3:45 pm.
Two individuals standing on the divider were killed on the spot, he added.
At least three others were injured and taken to Kurmitola General Hospital for treatment.
Police have seized the bus, while the driver fled the scene following the accident. Legal action is underway, officials said.
