Two men from Gazipur died within 24 hours while undergoing treatment in India, where they had travelled for better medical care.
Their bodies were brought back to Bangladesh through the Darshana International Immigration Checkpost in Chuadanga on Sunday night by another friend who had accompanied them.
According to officials at the Darshana checkpost, Md Habibur Rahman, 58, of Phulbaria area under Kapasia Upazila in Gazipur, and Billal Majhi, 50, of Kaliakair Upazila, entered India through the Darshana border on June 15 for treatment.
They had been receiving treatment at MR Bangur Hospital in Kolkata.
Hospital sources said Billal Majhi had been suffering from liver cancer for a long time and died at 9:15pm on 9 August. The following day, Habibur Rahman died at 7:47pm while undergoing treatment. Doctors said he died due to complications from a stroke.
After completing necessary legal and official procedures in India, their friend Md Abu Nahid, 45, collected the bodies and brought them back to Bangladesh.
The bodies of Billal Majhi and Habibur Rahman reached the Darshana checkpost at 7:10pm and 7:30pm respectively on 16 August. Later, after completing border formalities with assistance from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF), the bodies were formally handed over to their relatives.
The death of the two friends who had travelled together to India for treatment, and their return home accompanied by another friend, has cast a pall of grief among their families and local residents.
Darshana International Immigration Checkpost Sub-Inspector Md Tariq Hossain confirmed the matter, saying the bodies had been handed over to the relatives after completion of the legal procedures.
