Lionel Messi scored late but could not save Inter Miami from a 2-1 defeat against Toronto FC on Sunday.
The loss extended Miami’s winless run to five matches. They have lost four games during that run.
German Berterame returned to action after recovering from the head injury he suffered against CF Montreal in July. However, Miami struggled to create clear chances for much of the game.
Both teams made a physical start. Toronto pressed high and tried to stop Miami from building attacks.
Miami had the best early chance through Luis Suarez. The striker found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but sent his effort wide.
Neither side managed to score before the break as the first half ended 0-0.
Miami showed more intent after half time. Berterame came close soon after the restart, but his shot went just wide.
Toronto then took control of the game.
Josh Sargent opened the scoring with a fine left footed finish. Miami failed to clear the danger and Sargent fired the ball into the bottom corner.
Things quickly got worse for the hosts.
Derrick Etienne Jr. added Toronto’s second only minutes later. He beat goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to put his side 2-0 ahead.
Miami tried to respond but found it difficult to break through Toronto’s defence. They had managed only one shot on target with 10 minutes of normal time remaining.
Messi then gave Miami hope.
Rodrigo De Paul played a well timed pass through the Toronto defence. Messi collected it and finished with his left foot to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The goal lifted Miami as they pushed more players forward in search of an equaliser.
Eight minutes of stoppage time gave the hosts another opportunity to rescue a point. Toronto stayed strong at the back and protected their lead until the final whistle.
The defeat leaves Miami without a win in five straight matches. Their defence has also struggled during the poor run, conceding an average of 2.4 goals per game.
Miami will now have a week to prepare for their next match against CF Montreal on August 30.
