The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has distributed portfolios and duties between State Minister for Foreign Affairs-1 Humayun Kabir and State Minister for Foreign Affairs-2 Shama Obaed Islam.
The two state ministers will assist Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in conducting various activities of the ministry.
In a message sent to the media on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the distribution of responsibilities was formalised through a circular issued by the ministry.
According to the circular, State Minister Humayun Kabir will assist the foreign minister, under his direction and supervision, with bilateral and multilateral affairs, non-resident Bangladeshis, and other matters designated by the Foreign Minister.
On the other hand, State Minister Shama Obaed Islam has been assigned responsibilities regarding the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, human rights, research and innovation, environment and climate change, creative economy, LDC graduation, ICT, law of the sea and marine resources, global health diplomacy, and cultural and sports diplomacy.
She will also assist the foreign minister in these activities under his guidance and supervision.
The BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was formed on 17 February following its victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
In this government, Khalilur Rahman, who served as the National Security Advisor of outgoing interim government, was appointed as the foreign minister. Shama Obaed, a member of the BNP’s International Affairs Committee, was initially appointed as a state minister for Foreign Affairs.
Subsequently, Humayun Kabir was appointed as the prime minister’s foreign affairs adviser. He was then given charge as a state minister for Foreign Affairs last Friday.
