Two suspected muggers were killed in a mob beating at Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha in the early hours of Friday. The incident occurred at Khodda Mujahidpur village.
According to local sources, a group of three suspects attempted to commit a mugging in the Madarhat Bridge area of Edilpur union. When locals gave chase, the suspects attempted to flee at high speed on a motorcycle, but lost control and fell into a pond upon reaching Khodda Mujahidpur village.
As the suspects tried to climb out of the pond, locals identified them as robbers. Residents from the surrounding area rushed to the spot with sticks. While one suspect managed to flee, the other two fell back into the water while attempting to escape.
The agitated mob subsequently pulled the two men from the pond and beat them indiscriminately, resulting in their death on the spot.
Alim Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadullapur Police Station, stated that police reached the scene and recovered the two bodies. A motorcycle used by the suspects was also seized from the location.
The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed. The OC added that a specialist team has been called in to assist with the identification process.
