Pixar’s beloved duo Woody and Buzz Lightyear are set to return in ‘Toy Story 5’, as the franchise reaches its 30th anniversary and confronts a new world shaped by technology.
Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, the upcoming film revisits the iconic toys decades after their first adventure, this time exploring how modern digital devices are reshaping childhood imagination. The film is scheduled for release on June 19.
Stanton, one of Pixar’s most influential storytellers and a key figure behind films such as ‘Finding Nemo’ and ‘WALL-E’, returns to the Toy Story universe for the first time as director. He has hinted that this could be his final feature film at the studio, though he will remain involved in a creative leadership role.
The story introduces a tech-driven conflict as the toys confront a new generation of smart devices that compete for children’s attention. At the centre of the narrative is a new gadget named Lilypad, which reflects the growing influence of screens and digital play in everyday life.
Returning voice cast members include Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, alongside familiar favourites such as Joan Cusack, Wallace Shawn and Tony Hale. The film also brings in new voices, including Greta Lee, Conan O’Brien and others, expanding the toy universe with new characters shaped by both nostalgia and technology.
According to Stanton, the film explores how childhood connection and creativity evolve in an increasingly digital world, while maintaining the emotional core that defined the earlier films.
For the cast, the return has been emotional. Hanks and Allen have both reflected on the long journey of the franchise, which has spanned three decades and multiple generations of viewers.
