Months of speculation surrounding Toofan 2 have finally come to an end. After a long period of uncertainty over the sequel’s future, actor Shakib Khan has officially signed on for the project, paving the way for production to begin later this year.
Director Raihan Rafi first hinted at a sequel shortly after the release of Toofan last year. The film’s closing scene also teased a second instalment. Ahead of its overseas release in June 2025, Rafi said audiences would have to wait at least a year for the sequel. Shakib Khan, however, later clarified that Toofan 2 was unlikely to arrive the following year because a production of such scale would require extensive preparation and filming across multiple countries.
In the meantime, Shakib remained busy working with Rafi on Tandob and with Mehedi Hasan Hridoy on Borbaad. Rumours later spread on social media claiming that Toofan 2 had been delayed because the actor had not allocated shooting dates.
In January this year, Rafi said in a podcast that the makers were aiming for a 2027 release and hoped to begin filming towards the end of the year. As no formal agreement had been reached at the time, uncertainty continued to surround the project.
Bringing an end to the speculation, Shakib Khan officially signed for Toofan 2 last week. Sources said filming is expected to begin in December this year or January next year. The sequel will reunite the original team, including director Raihan Rafi, production houses Alpha-i, Chorki and SVF, along with the principal cast and crew including actress Masuma Rahman Nabila. The producers are targeting either Eid-ul-Fitr or Eid-ul-Azha for the film’s release.
A reliable source associated with Toofan 2 confirmed the development to Times of Bangladesh. According to the source, as the film is a direct sequel, there is little possibility of major cast changes. However, the production houses are expected to take about a month before making an official announcement.
Toofan was officially announced on 11 December 2023 at a grand event held at a hotel in Dhaka. Directed by Raihan Rafi, the film featured Shakib Khan in dual roles alongside Kolkata actor Mimi Chakraborty and Bangladeshi actor Masuma Rahman Nabila. Set against the rise of a gangster in the 1990s, the film was produced by Alpha-i Studios, Chorki and Kolkata-based SVF.
Released during Eid-ul-Azha last year, Toofan created a sensation at the domestic box office. It screened in more than 120 cinemas across Bangladesh and recorded consecutive houseful shows. The film later opened in 14 countries and was released in West Bengal on 5 July. Its songs Laage Ura Dhura and Dushtu Kokil collectively surpassed one billion views on YouTube, a rare milestone for Bengali film songs. The film also enjoyed record-breaking box-office success, with its domestic and international earnings attracting widespread attention. The makers hope the sequel will achieve similar success at the box office.
