Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming Tomb Raider series breached UK health and safety regulations during production, according to a ruling by Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE), writes Deadline.
The finding relates to filming at Shinfield Studios earlier this year. HSE determined that Project Temple Productions Ltd, the company set up to produce the series starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, failed to comply with requirements under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.
The safety watchdog found that the production company had not ensured crew members underwent the required biological monitoring while isocyanate paints were being sprayed.
Isocyanates are among the leading causes of occupational asthma. HSE guidance says workers involved in spraying such paints should use suitable protective equipment, while an invisible mist from the substance can remain in the air for up to 20 minutes.
Employers are required to establish how long it takes for the substance to clear from a particular work area and ensure adequate safety measures are in place.
HSE issued Project Temple an improvement notice in April, ordering the company to address the breach.
The company complied with the relevant requirements within a month, according to information published by the regulator.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment on the matter.
HSE rarely issues formal notices over television productions. Only four TV shoots have been cited by the watchdog in the past four years, with Tomb Raider emerging as the highest-profile case among them.
The series, created and written by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, began production in January.
Amazon MGM Studios later released a first-look image of Turner portraying the iconic video-game character Lara Croft.
The safety ruling follows another setback during filming.
Turner sustained a minor injury on set in March, prompting production to stop for roughly two weeks while the Game of Thrones actor recovered.
Amazon MGM Studios is producing Tomb Raider for Prime Video in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics.
Turner leads a cast that includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie and August Wittgenstein.
Waller-Bridge serves as creator, writer, executive producer and co-showrunner, working alongside Chad Hodge, who is also an executive producer and co-showrunner.
Jonathan Van Tulleken is directing and executive producing.
