Tom Cruise has officially begun posting on TikTok, using the platform to promote his upcoming film Digger as industry speculation grows that the project could become his strongest Academy Awards contender in decades.
According to Yahoo News, Cruise’s TikTok account, @tomcruise, first appeared in March 2021 after a series of viral deepfake videos created by Belgian visual effects artist Chris Ume captured global attention. Although the account has amassed 1.8 million followers, the actor had not shared any content until this week.
Cruise has now uploaded three videos, all centred on the trailer for Digger. Rather than offering personal or behind-the-scenes content, the posts focus exclusively on promoting the film.
Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, Digger is a satirical dark comedy starring Cruise as Digger Rockwell, the world’s most powerful man. Hidden beneath extensive prosthetic makeup, Cruise portrays a character attempting to save humanity from a global catastrophe that he himself unleashed. The trailer suggests the story revolves around climate disaster alongside the threat of nuclear war.
The film has already attracted awards-season attention, with many industry observers viewing it as Cruise’s best opportunity to secure a competitive Oscar nomination in years. His most recent Academy Award nomination came in 2000 for Magnolia, while he received an Honorary Academy Award in 2026.
Iñárritu previously directed The Revenant, the film that earned Leonardo DiCaprio his first Academy Award. The collaboration has fuelled expectations that Digger could mark a similar milestone for Cruise.
Cruise’s move to TikTok also signals a stronger social media push ahead of the film’s release.
Digger is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 2 October.
