Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called for the publication of a white paper on the government’s actions in the energy sector, saying the authorities have failed to ensure energy security.
TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman made the demand on Monday morning while speaking at a human chain organised on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital to mark International Clean Energy Day.
“The government has completely failed to ensure energy security. We are deeply embarrassed,” he said.
Iftekharuzzaman raised the question, saying, “Dr Yunus has spoken about the concept of ‘three zeros’ in many parts of the world. But after taking charge as chief adviser of the interim government, has he spoken about ‘three zeros’ even once in the country? Why has he not?”
He also criticised the government for preparing an energy master plan just days before the election without consulting stakeholders. He said even if the plan had received approval, TIB would have rejected it.
“The main characteristic of this government is making decisions internally while excluding stakeholders,” he said. “Working through opaque processes such as issuing ordinances is completely unacceptable.”
Iftekharuzzaman said transparency, accountability and meaningful consultation were essential for credible policymaking in the energy sector and reiterated the demand for a white paper to clarify the government’s actions and responsibilities.
