Dhaka District Police detained three individuals at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Ashulia on Thursday afternoon while they were placing a wreath bearing a sticker in with the name of Awami League (whose activities were banned by the interim government) and its ousted leader, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The incident occurred around 1:40pm during Independence and National Day observances, according to a police press release.
Police said the individuals were attempting to lay flowers at the main altar with an A4-sized paper that read, “A humble tribute to all martyrs on behalf of the Bangladesh Awami League and Sheikh Hasina.”
The detainees were identified as Rakibul Islam Durjoy, 32, of Gauripur in Mymensingh; Mishti Subhash, 28, of Banchharampur in Brahmanbaria; and Tahmina Akter, 40, of Lalbagh in Dhaka.
All three are currently in custody at Ashulia Police Station.
According to the press statement, legal action is underway.
