Bangladesh captain Jamal Bhuiyan told reporters on Monday that he expects an intense and unruly contest when his side face India in Tuesday’s Asian Cup qualifier in Dhaka, a fixture that reliably produces tension on the pitch as well as in the stands.
Although neither team remains in contention for a place in the main tournament, the rivalry alone ensures that the match cannot be treated as a formality. Speaking at the team hotel, Jamal was frank about what he anticipates. “There will be many free kicks, yellow cards and arguments. I will treat it as a normal match, but I know what it means,” he said.
The midfielder described the meeting as a high stakes emotional contest, even if the standings no longer carry weight. “It will be a very emotional, high voltage game. There is a long break for the national team after this. If we can finish the year with a win, it will be positive for us, for the fans and for you,” he said, adding that he will need to play with a balance of passion and control.
Bangladesh have not beaten India in 22 years and were held to a goalless draw in Shillong in March, yet Jamal believes this squad gives them a genuine chance. “Given where we are, this is Bangladesh’s strongest squad. So of course we have a big opportunity,” he said.
Recent home matches have brought late disappointment for Bangladesh, who conceded decisive goals in the final moments. Jamal acknowledged the defensive weaknesses but said the match could tilt if Bangladesh exploit space behind the Indian back line. He highlighted winger Rakib Hossain as a key threat. “We have defensive problems, but if India push high we will have space. Our attacking players are very quick. Rakib is probably the fastest player in South Asia. If we use him properly, whoever India play at the back, he will kill the defence,” he said.
