The United States booked their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday, overcoming a controversial red card for Folarin Balogun.
The USA will face Belgium in the round of 16 on July 7, but they will be without Balogun after the striker was sent off during the second half.
Balogun gave the United States the lead in the first half with his third goal of the tournament, finishing confidently to put Mauricio Pochettino’s side in front.
The match took a dramatic turn after the break when Balogun was shown a straight red card for accidentally landing on a Bosnia defender’s ankle. Despite protests from the U.S. players, the dismissal stood, leaving the Americans to play with 10 men.
Bosnia enjoyed more possession after the sending-off but struggled to create clear-cut chances against a disciplined U.S. defense. The Americans remained dangerous on the counterattack despite their numerical disadvantage.
Malik Tillman wrapped up the victory in the 82nd minute with a superb curling free kick that slipped inside the post, doubling the lead and putting the result beyond doubt.
Bosnia pushed forward during 10 minutes of stoppage time but failed to find a breakthrough as the United States comfortably held on to secure a place in the last 16.
The victory continues the impressive progress of Mauricio Pochettino’s side, who will now prepare for a tough knockout clash against Belgium without suspended striker Balogun.
