A 17-year-old college student, Ashfaq Kabir Sajid, was killed allegedly after being thrown into a lift shaft in an under-construction building on DC Road under Chawkbazar Police Station in the port city.
The incident occurred on Sunday night at a building in the Mousumi Residential Area. Following the incident, the victim’s father Abul Hashem Sikder filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station on Tuesday, naming seven individuals as accused. Police have already arrested the building’s security guard Enamul Haque.
Ashfaq Kabir was an eleventh-grade student of BAF Shaheen College. His home was in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar. He had been living in a rented house beside the DC Road graveyard at Bakalia in Chattogram city.
According to the case statement, Ashfaq was called by his friend Fardin Hasan over the phone on Sunday afternoon and taken to the Mousumi Residential Area on Bakalia Access Road.
Upon arrival, a group of youths including Aimon, Anik, Rana, Michael, Ilias, Enayet Ullah and Miskatul Qayes allegedly threatened him with sharp weapons and forcibly took him away.
At one stage, in an attempt to escape, Ashfaq entered a nearby under-construction building, locked the gate and went up to the eighth floor. When the attackers later knocked on the gate, security guard Enamul Haque opened it.
The group then went upstairs, assaulted Ashfaq and eventually threw him from the eighth floor into the empty lift shaft.
He was rescued in a critical condition and taken to hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Chawkbazar police station Officer-in-Charge Babul Azad said efforts were underway to identify and arrest the other suspects involved in the incident.
He said the investigation was ongoing to determine the motive behind the killing, including whether there was any link to clashes between teenage gangs.
