A college student was shot by miscreants in the Manikdi Amtala area under Cantonment Police Station in Dhaka early Tuesday.
The victim, Md Karim, 18, a Class 12 student at Mirpur Bangla College, was shot around 12:15am.
His father, Rafiqul Islam, said Karim had gone to a nearby shop to buy mosquito coils. After briefly speaking with his friend Tuhin, he was walking home alone when unidentified assailants opened fire from the darkness.
Local residents informed his family, who first took him to Kurmitola Multicare Specialised Hospital before transferring him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Surgeons removed a bullet from his right leg, while doctors confirmed another bullet that struck his left leg had exited his body.
Karim was discharged later that night after treatment. His family said they do not know who carried out the attack or the motive, adding that he had no disputes in the locality.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, said Cantonment Police had been informed and were investigating the incident.
