Tawfique Nawaz, husband of former social welfare minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dipu Moni, was laid to rest at Banani graveyard on Thursday following his namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) at Gulshan’s Azad Mosque.
Dipu Moni, who was granted 12-hour parole to attend her husband’s funeral, remained in a prison van outside the mosque while the janaza was being held.
After the prayers, she stepped out of the van to see her husband for the last time before the burial.
The moment turned emotional as she bid farewell to him.
Following the burial, Dipu Moni is scheduled to return to prison by 6pm, according to family and police sources.
She was brought to Dhaka from Munshiganj District Jail at around 6:15am under tight security. She reached her Kalabagan residence at about 8:15am.
Md Fazle Ashik, officer-in-charge of Kalabagan Police Station, said Dipu Moni remained inside the prison van during the janaza.
Dipu Moni was granted parole until 6pm on Thursday.
Tawfique Nawaz died at around 10:30pm on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital in Gulshan. He was 76.
