BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Cox’s Bazar on 18 January to pay respects at the grave of Wasim Akram, who was martyred during the July mass uprising .
Cox’s Bazar district BNP publicity secretary Akhtar Uddin Chowdhury confirmed the information on Monday night.
He said, “If everything goes as planned, Tarique Rahman will visit Pekua to offer prayers at Wasim Akram’s grave.”
Former district Chhatra Dal general secretary Fahimur Rahman said that Tarique Rahman’s visit to Cox’s Bazar after a long time is a matter of great fortune for the BNP family in the district.
Leaders and activists have also expressed hope that during the Cox’s Bazar visit, Tarique Rahman will enquire about the family of BNP activist Jagir Hossain, who was shot dead in Ukhiya in November 2023.
Ukhiya upazila Chhatra Dal joint convener Mahbub Ahmed Shakil said Jagir Hossain, a dedicated BNP activist, was brutally killed by gunfire, and they expect Tarique Rahman to enquire about his family, including his two orphaned children, and visit Ukhiya to pay respects at his grave.
According to party sources, Tarique Rahman will visit Bogura on 11 January after 19 years and will pay respects at the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed in Rangpur the following day, on 12 January.
Wasim Akram was martyred on 16 July 2024 during the anti-discrimination student movement in a two-way clash involving protesters, police and Chhatra League in Chattogram’s Muradpur area. A third-year undergraduate student of Chattogram College, he lived in a rented accommodation in the city’s Chawkbazar area and was a member of the Chattogram College Chhatra Dal convening committee.
Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on 25 December last year. In less than a week, his mother and party Chairperson Khaleda Zia passed away on 30 December while undergoing treatment in Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital.
