Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday reaffirmed Bangladesh’s unwavering commitment to global peace and stability, describing United Nations peacekeeping missions as a unique initiative for ensuring human security.
In a message released on International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the prime minister extended his heartfelt greetings and deep respect to peacekeepers serving across the globe.
He highlighted that Bangladesh has long maintained a significant presence in UN peacekeeping operations.
The prime minister noted that Bangladeshi peacekeepers have significantly enhanced the nation’s international image and dignity through their professionalism, competence, and adherence to humanitarian values.
Recalling the historical foundations of Bangladesh’s role in global security, Tarique paid tribute to former president Ziaur Rahman.
He stated that the late president’s adoption of a balanced foreign policy increased the country’s acceptability within the United Nations and positioned Bangladesh in favour of international cooperation.
Due to his active diplomatic initiatives, Bangladesh emerged as one of the largest troop-contributing countries to UN missions.
The prime minister paid profound tribute to those “brave peacekeepers” who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, asserting that their contributions would remain “forever memorable” in the nation’s history.
He also expressed his sympathy for injured peacekeepers and their families.
The message further underscored the vital role of women peacekeepers from Bangladesh, stating that their leadership and professional excellence have earned global appreciation.
The prime minister described their success as a “bright example” of Bangladesh’s progress and a reflection of women’s empowerment.
Looking ahead, Tarique stated that Bangladesh would continue to take active initiatives in UN operations to promote global peace.
“We believe that a safe and peaceful world can be built through mutual respect, cooperation and tolerance,” he said, calling on all stakeholders to uphold the values of humanity and work together for a safer world.
