BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman arrived in Sylhet on Wednesday night to launch the party’s campaign for the 13th parliamentary election.
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-227) carrying the BNP leader landed at Osmani International Airport shortly after 8pm. He had earlier departed from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at approximately 7:30pm.
Tarique is leading a 14-member delegation, which includes his wife, Zubaida Rahman.
According to sources, upon his arrival, the Chairman proceeded by bus to offer prayers at the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) and Hazrat Shahporan (R).
This visit marks a significant milestone as Tarique last visited Sylhet in 2005 while serving as the party’s senior joint secretary general.
By commencing the electoral campaign in Sylhet after visiting the holy shrines, Rahman is upholding a political tradition established by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia following the introduction of the caretaker government system in 1991.
The sources state that Tarique Rahman is scheduled to attend a BNP-organised programme on Thursday, at the Sylhet Alia Madrasa field.
The city of Sylhet has reportedly been transformed into a “city of festivals” ahead of the chairman’s arrival.
Local party activists and the general public have shown spontaneous participation and high levels of enthusiasm, marked by processions, meetings, and widespread announcements throughout the area.
