BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has called an emergency meeting of the party’s Standing Committee at 9:30pm on Friday.
Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, a member of the BNP Standing Committee, confirmed the meeting will be held at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan. The meeting will be presided over by Tarique Rahman.
A senior BNP leader indicated that this assembly is not part of any pre-scheduled routine. “There will also be no specific agenda. However, the meeting is certainly important, as acting chairman Tarique Rahman may be elected as the chairman of the party through this meeting,” the leader added.
This follows the passing of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on 30 December last year, as the nation gradually emerges from a period of mourning.
Ahead of the national election, members of the party’s highest policymaking body, the National Standing Committee, have reportedly advised Tarique Rahman to formally assume the full responsibilities of the BNP chairman.
Earlier, on 4 January, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir informed the media in Sylhet that Tarique Rahman would be elected as the party’s chairman within a day or two.
Tarique Rahman was initially nominated as the acting chairman of the BNP in 2018, following the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
