BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman held a courtesy meeting with National Citizen Party (NCP) convener Md Nahid Islam on Thursday night, where discussions focused on post-election stability and the pursuit of justice for past atrocities.
The meeting took place at 8pm on Sunday at the residence of the NCP convener. Upon his arrival, Nahid greeted Tarique with flowers, a replica of a water lily (Shapla), and a letter written by Anas, a martyr of the July-August mass uprising.
During the session, the NCP convener congratulated the BNP chairman on his party’s victory in the 13th parliamentary election.
However, Nahid Islam raised serious concerns regarding reports of post-election violence and attacks allegedly carried out by BNP activists in various parts of the country, specifically highlighting Hatia in Noakhali and Panchagarh.
He urged Tarique to take effective measures to immediately halt such incidents.
The NCP convener further called upon the BNP leader to ensure the execution of the verdict against Sheikh Hasina in the July-August massacre case and to continue the judicial process for all killings committed during that period.
Regarding the NCP’s role in the new parliament, Nahid Islam stated that the party would serve as a “responsible and effective opposition” to ensure the government’s accountability. He added, however, that the path to dialogue would remain open for resolving any national crises.
The high-profile meeting was attended by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and BNP Standing Committee member and Central Election Steering Committee Chairman Nazrul Islam Khan.
Representing the NCP were Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam.
