Malaysia is set to join the growing list of nations hosting franchise T20 competitions, with the launch of the Malaysia Premier League in June 2026. The tournament will feature five teams and include international stars, with former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal named as one of the mentors.
The Malaysia Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed the news in an official press release, announcing that the first edition of the tournament will take place from 7 to 27 June 2026 in Kuala Lumpur. Australian fast bowling legend Brett Lee will also serve as a mentor alongside Tamim.
Tamim, who has retired from international cricket, has not previously been involved in any team management or mentorship role, making this a new experience for the Bangladesh star.
The tournament will be managed, broadcast and marketed by the IPG Group, which currently oversees operations for the Lanka Premier League.
MCA President Mahinda Vallipuram said, “I am delighted to announce the dates for the first season of Malaysia T20. With our experience and capability in delivering successful leagues in various parts of the world, we will ensure that Malaysian cricket fans witness thrilling cricket action.”
Anil Mohan, founder and CEO of the IPG Group, added, “With the participation of Indian players, the Malaysia T20 League will attract attention across Asia. Our aim is to combine Malaysia’s cricket passion with our global league expertise to deliver an exciting and memorable season that leaves a lasting impact on fans.”
The introduction of this league adds to the rapid global expansion of T20 cricket, with Malaysia becoming the latest country to embrace the franchise format.
