Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has firmly denied speculation linking him with a ministerial position in the incoming government, describing the reports as “completely false”.
The rumours surfaced following the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on 12 February, in which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a majority by winning 209 of 299 seats. With the BNP-led alliance preparing to form a government after nearly two decades, widespread conjecture has emerged over potential cabinet appointments.
Throughout 14 February, several media outlets, citing party sources, reported that Tamim was set to be appointed State Minister for Youth and Sports under the technocrat quota. The claims gained traction across social media, prompting strong public reaction.
However, late on 15 February, Tamim addressed the matter directly through a post on his verified Facebook page. The former opener rejected the reports outright and clarified that no such proposal had been made to him.
“Throughout today, I have seen various rumours circulating in the media and on social media about me. These are completely false,” Tamim wrote.
He further added: “I have not received any such proposal. I request everyone to refrain from spreading baseless news of this kind.”
Tamim, who remains one of Bangladesh’s most prominent cricketing figures, has not indicated any immediate plans beyond his involvement in the sport.
