Sylhet seeks BGB deployment ahead of NCP’s July march

Sylhet district administration has requested Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) deployment in five upazilas to maintain order during the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) July march programmes on Thursday and Friday.

Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun sent the request to the Home Ministry and BGB headquarters on Wednesday, following a letter from Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md Jaber Sadek, reports UNB.

The upazilas are Jaintapur, Golapganj, Gowainghat, Kanaighat and Companiganj.

Local NCP leaders said marches will be held in three upazilas Thursday and three more Friday, with central leaders attending.

At a press briefing Wednesday, district convener Md Junaed Ahmed announced the schedule — Golapganj at 11am, Kanaighat at 3pm and Osmaninagar at 7pm on Thursday; and Companiganj at 3pm, Gowainghat at 5pm and Jaintapur at 7pm on Friday.

Senior leaders including Convener Nahid Islam, MPs Akhter Hosen and Mahmuda Mitu, and organisers Nasiruddin Patwary, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah are expected to join.

The marches are part of NCP’s month‑long nationwide programme in July. The request for BGB deployment comes after Tuesday’s violence in Habiganj, where NCP alleged attacks on leaders following a rally.

On Wednesday, police stopped an NCP convoy after Section 144 was imposed in Habiganj municipality to prevent clashes with BNP‑affiliated groups.
