Rail communication between Sylhet and the rest of Bangladesh has been suspended after an oil-laden train derailed inside the Lawachara National Park between Bhanugachh and Sreemangal stations in Moulvibazar.
The incident occurred around 4pm on Friday in the Latuachhara area along the Akhaura–Sylhet railway line.
Vanugach Railway Station Master Gauraprasad Das Palash confirmed the matter.
An official from the Railway Nirapatta Bahini (RNB), Parag Bakul Das, who was onboard the affected train numbered 962, said the train had departed from Sylhet in the morning. While entering the Latuachhara forest area in the afternoon, the crew suddenly noticed smoke.
He said the locomotive master was immediately alerted, after which the train was stopped. It was later found that four wheels of one wagon had derailed. He added that the train was not carrying any oil at the time of the incident.
Station Master Gauraprasad Das Palash said rail services on the Sylhet route would remain suspended until the derailed wagon is recovered.
“Train movement will resume after the recovery operation is completed,” he said.
