A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Bangladesh Swechchhasebak League leader Kamrul Hassan Ripon on a two-day remand in a case lodged over the murder of Din Islam Bepari during the July–August mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order after the investigating officer produced Ripon before the court with a remand prayer.
Sub-Inspector Mohin Uddin of the prosecution department said the order followed an earlier appearance in which the accused had been sent to jail pending the hearing.
Police said locals apprehended Ripon in the Bashundhara Residential Area at around 2:30am on Monday. After he was beaten, they handed him over to police, who later admitted him to Kurmitola General Hospital for treatment.
On Tuesday, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Russell Sardar of Jatrabari Police Station, sought a seven-day remand, but the court fixed Thursday for the hearing.
During the hearing, Ripon’s lawyer Obaidul Islam, along with other lawyers, filed a petition seeking bail and cancellation of the remand. The court rejected the plea.
According to case documents, the incident took place on 5 August 2024, the day the government fell, when a procession of students and civilians was heading towards Shahbagh. As the march reached the Jatrabari intersection around 1:30pm, police and activists of the Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Swechchhasebak League and Jubo League allegedly carried out an armed attack.
Din Islam Bepari sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the assault and died on the spot. Although the killing occurred during the 2024 uprising, a case over the incident was filed with Jatrabari Police Station on 20 February last year.
