A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent Kamrul Hassan Ripon, the president of Dhaka Metropolitan South Swechchhashebok League, to jail in connection with the Deen Islam Bepari murder case filed at Jatrabari Police Station.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order.
The court further scheduled a remand hearing for Thursday. The development follows an application by the case’s investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Russel Sarder of Jatrabari Police Station, who sought a seven-day remand for the accused.
According to the case statement, the incident occurred during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement on 5 August, 2024. At approximately 1:30 pm, a procession of students and the general public heading towards Shahbagh was ambushed in the Jatrabari area. The First Information Report (FIR) alleges that members of the police, Awami League, Chhatra League, Swechchhashebok League, and Jubo League launched an unprovoked attack using firearms.
During the assault, Deen Islam was struck by buckshot and five bullets in various parts of his body, leading to his death on the street. A murder case regarding the incident was filed at Jatrabari Police Station on 20 February last year.
Ripon had been apprehended by locals at around 2:30 am on Monday and handed over to Vatara Police Station. He was subsequently treated at Kurmitola General Hospital for injuries sustained during a scuffle with an agitated crowd before being produced in court.
