A writ petition has been filed in the High Court seeking to declare Section 124A of the Penal Code, related to sedition, as unconstitutional and void.
On Tuesday, 20 January, Supreme Court lawyer Ishrat Hasan filed this writ.
The writ states that the sedition law severely infringes upon citizens’ freedom of expression. Every citizen has the right to freedom of expression against the government.
The sedition law is a colonial-era law, it goes on to add, stating that the act was primarily enacted to suppress the independence movement and is inconsistent with a democratic constitution.
The writ has named the Law and Justice secretary of the Ministry of Law, and the senior secretary of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, and senior secretary of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs as respondents.
