Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has asserted that the government intends to form a “people’s government” rather than a party-centric one and is committed to institutionalising the country’s electoral system.
Speaking at the inauguration of a canal re-excavation programme at Kandapasha in Gournadi Upazila on Sunday morning, the minister emphasised that staying in power is contingent on the democratic process.
“We will not form any party government or party state. We will form a people’s government,” the minister stated at 11:30am.
“If elected, we will be the government; if not, we will not. But we will institutionalise the electoral system”.
The re-excavation of the Kaplatli canal was launched under the Barisal, Bhola, Jhalokati, and Pirojpur District Irrigation Development Project.
During the event, Minister Swapan also remarked that an environment must be established for bureaucrats and the police to work specifically for the benefit of the public.
Responding to queries from journalists, the minister revealed that the government has developed a plan to excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals across the country.
While the official inauguration of the national project is expected soon, the work initiated in Barisal serves as a preliminary component of this initiative.
He further noted that these efforts would be accelerated in the future. Alongside the canal excavation, a tree-planting programme has been introduced as part of a wider afforestation drive. Local administration officials were present at the inauguration ceremony.
