A college student was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen posing as police inside his home in Shivpur village, Chitalmari, Bagerhat on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased Amir Hamza, 23, son of Ruhul Amin Munsi, was a first-year honours student at Khulna Government Sundarban College and also worked at Popular Diagnostic Centre.

Authorities have recovered the body and launched a manhunt to track down the assailants.

According to police and family members, around 4pm, Amir Hamza was standing in his courtyard talking with his father and uncle when six young men on three motorcycles, wearing helmets, entered the property posing as police officers. Amir Hamza tried to escape, running toward a nearby canal, but the attackers shot him in the head before fleeing.

Bagerhat Additional Superintendent of Police Md Shamim Hossain said senior police officials visited the scene.

Multiple units, including district police, CID, PBI, and the district detective branch, have been deployed to identify the culprits.

The body has been sent to Bagerhat 250-bed District Hospital for post-mortem.

The incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks in Bagerhat.

On 7 March, Noor Islas, 27, was found shot near the Dhaka-Khulna Highway in Kahalpur, Mollahat, and on 14 March, businessman Sohag Sheikh, 42, was killed while returning home from Mollahat town market.

Police have yet to make any arrests in these cases.
