A student was assaulted by fellow students at North South University in Bhatara, Dhaka, over allegations of desecrating the holy Quran after a Facebook post sparked public outrage.
The student, Apurbo Chandra, 26, was arrested by the police following the incident, which occurred around 2am on Saturday.
On a tip off, the police intervened and rescued Apurbo from the scene. He was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s emergency department for initial treatment.
Bhatara Police Inspector Md Mostafizur Rahman stated, “Outraged students attacked Apurbo Chandra inside the university premises, accusing him of desecrating the Quran.After being alerted, the police responded promptly, rescuing him and arranging for his medical care.
“A case was filed against the student that night, and he was sent to court in the morning.”
The inspector added that the situation at the university is now under control, and the matter is being further investigated by the police.
