Next year marks the 100th anniversary of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic ‘Pather Dabi’ (The Right of Way).
To commemorate this milestone, acclaimed Kolkata director Srijit Mukherjee is set to bring a cinematic adaptation of the beloved story to the big screen.
Titled ‘Emperor vs. Sarat Chandra’, the film is scheduled for release on May 1 next year. Srijit plans to stay true to the novel’s setting and period while highlighting how opposition to authority can still carry grave consequences today.
The film is a joint production between SVF Production Company (Srikant Mehta and Mahendra Soni) and Daag Creative Media (Rana Sarkar).
Originally published in 1926, Pather Dabi intensified the anti-British movement in India and was subsequently banned in 1927, sparking widespread agitation. Even Rabindranath Tagore lent his voice to the movement at the time.
Srijit aims to bring these historical and social issues vividly to life on screen. Shooting is expected to begin in November this year, though both Srijit and Rana Sarkar have remained tight-lipped about the cast.
The casting process is ongoing, and the team promises to reveal the actors gradually as plans progress.
