Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made a historic debut at the North American box office, delivering the biggest opening day ever for a domestic release, writes Variety.
The Marvel superhero film earned $168 million from 4,487 theatres across the US and Canada on Friday, surpassing the previous record held by Avengers: Endgame.
The 2019 blockbuster earned $157 million on its first day in cinemas.
Sony expects Brand New Day to collect around $325 million by the end of Sunday, while rival estimates suggest the film could reach as high as $358 million.
If it achieves that figure, the film will claim the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history.
Avengers: Endgame currently holds the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend with $357 million.
Spider-Man: No Way Home follows with $260 million, while Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens rank third and fourth with $257 million and $247 million respectively.
The film marks Tom Holland’s return as Peter Parker following 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In the previous film, Doctor Strange erased the world’s memory of Peter’s identity, leaving him without the support of his closest friends.
In Brand New Day, Peter faces a new chapter without allies including MJ, played by Zendaya, and Ned, played by Jacob Batalon.
The cast also features Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Liza Colón-Zayas and Tramell Tillman.
Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey ranked second on Friday, earning $14.5 million in its third weekend.
The epic film is expected to add $51 million by Sunday, bringing its North American total to $395 million.
Toy Story 5 placed third with $1.8 million on Friday.
The animated sequel is projected to earn $6.2 million over the weekend, taking its domestic total to $461 million after four weekends.
Universal’s Minions & Monsters secured fourth place with $1.66 million on Friday and is expected to reach $5.6 million for the weekend, pushing its domestic total to $168 million.
Disney’s Moana rounded out the top five, earning $1.6 million on Friday.
The animated hit is expected to add $5.3 million over the weekend, taking its domestic earnings to $114 million after four weekends.
