Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad left Dhaka Thursday morning for Iran to attend the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

He departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30am to join the funeral prayers at the invitation of Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

The Speaker is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on 4 July after attending the funeral ceremonies.

Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, he played a pivotal role in shaping Iran’s political system. In 1980, he briefly served as defense minister, later supervised the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps during the Iran‑Iraq War, and was elected president.

After the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Iran’s Assembly of Experts appointed him Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

Ayatollah Khamenei was born on 19 April 1939, in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, and was martyred on 28 February at the age of 86.
