A man was hacked to death allegedly by his drug-addicted son while offering prayers at their home in Puran Bhadurdangi village under Chartarapur union of Pabna Sadar upazila on Sunday night.
The victim was identified as Nizam Pramanik, 60, son of late Entaj Pramanik. Police detained his son, 30-year-old Mostafa Pramanik, from the scene soon after the incident.
During the arrest, Mostafa attacked police officers, injuring three sub-inspectors — Abu Bakar Siddique, Ziaur Rahman and Abu Raihan. SI Ziaur Rahman was later admitted to Sujanagar Upazila Health Complex, while the others received first aid.u
Police and locals said Nizam returned home after selling milk in the market and began offering his Isha prayers after dinner. While praying, Mostafa allegedly locked the door from inside and attacked him with a knife, killing him instantly.
Family members broke the door open after hearing commotion and found Nizam lying in a pool of blood. Police recovered the body and detained the accused.
Mizanur Rahman, another son of the deceased, said Mostafa had long harassed family members for drug money. “He hacked my father to death while he was praying. He often beat us and destroyed property when we refused to give him money. I demand justice,” he said.
Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdus Salam said additional police have been deployed in the area. “Legal action will be taken following a thorough investigation,” he added.
