The government is set to introduce Bangladesh’s first electric train service along the 52-kilometre Narayanganj-Dhaka-Joydebpur route. The project was discussed on Wednesday during a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (Ecnec).
Currently, Bangladesh Railway operates diesel-powered trains across its 3,093-kilometre network. According to official documents, electric trains will be 40 per cent more fuel-efficient and will significantly increase operational speeds.
The project proposal highlights that the route could serve as a vital transit link to ease traffic congestion and vehicle pressure between Dhaka and its surrounding industrial hubs of Gazipur and Narayanganj.
At present, ageing diesel-powered engines cannot run at desired speeds, preventing Bangladesh Railway from operating sufficient trips to meet passenger demand.
According to the proposal, electric trains will bring about a major transformation in the economy and transport sector.
Electric trains accelerate and decelerate far more rapidly than diesel engines, allowing them to reach maximum speed quickly after station stops. Consequently, travel time along the Narayanganj-Dhaka-Joydebpur corridor is expected to be reduced by more than half.
Transport experts and railway officials noted that while initial capital investment for electric rail is relatively higher, its operation and maintenance costs are significantly lower.
The system is also considered far more reliable and environmentally friendly. Officials said that electric trains will reduce operating costs by 35 per cent, cut maintenance expenses by 30 to 50 per cent, and decrease carbon emissions by 20 to 30 per cent.
