The dreams of higher education, a family’s hopes, and a burning desire to give something back to the nation – all came to a tragic halt with the death of Jamil Ahmed Limon. The 27-year-old PhD student, who was killed in Florida, USA, made his final journey home not as a scholar returning with knowledge, but as a body inside a coffin.
Limon’s remains arrived at Dhaka’s Shahjalal International Airport at 8:47 am on Monday. After completion of official formalities, his grieving family members received the body. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid was present at the airport to offer condolences.
The body was then transported 187 kilometres in a refrigerated ambulance, reaching the ancestral home in Lal Doba village of Madarganj upazila, Jamalpur, at 3:12pm. As the news spread, a deep shadow of grief descended upon the entire village.
After Maghrib prayers, the funeral was held at the Lal Doba High School ground. Hundreds of mourners, including local Member of Parliament Mostafizur Rahman Babu, took part. Limon was then laid to rest next to his grandfather’s grave in the family cemetery.
During the funeral, Limon’s father, Jhurul Haque, broke down as he spoke to those gathered.
“What I have lost, I will never get back,” he said in a choked voice. “I want no one else to die like this, like my child. Wherever they may be – at home or abroad – may everyone be able to study safely.”
He confirmed that the FBI and other US law enforcement agencies are investigating the murder and demanded the maximum punishment for those responsible.
